
“Borjomi” is Registered in China
Georgian
appellation of origin “Borjomi” was registered in the People’s Republic of
China on the basis of the application of the National Intellectual Property
Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti.
As
of today, the use of the appellation of origin “Borjomi” in the People’s
Republic of China without the consent of the Ministry of Environmental
Protection and Agriculture of Georgia will be prohibited.

Identification of Products Protected by Geographical Indications will be Possible by the Special Logo
Svanetian Tower, Qvevri, Grape Cluster, Golden Fleece are the elements of the logo of Georgian Geographical Indication created for the purpose of identification of products protected by the geographical indication and an appellation of origin. The logo was designed by advertising company “Abk communication” and was inspired by the lower stone of the north window of the “Abuletaurt” fortress in village Kistan, Khevsureti.

Draft Amendments to the Law of Georgia, the Logo of Geographical Indications and Specifications of Four Products are ready – the Twinning Project is completed
The EU-funded Twinning Project for institutional cooperation between Public Administrations - “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”, was closed in solemn ceremony today. The main beneficiary of the Project was the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti, which was given an opportunity, through sharing experience and knowledge of leading countries in this field, to create the administrative and institutional mechanisms, which will strengthen the protection and control system of geographical indications in Georgia and facilitate capacity building and deepening the knowledge in the mentioned field.

The Steering Committee of the Twinning Project Held the Final Meeting
Members of the Steering Committee of the EU-funded Twinning Project for institutional cooperation between Public Administrations discussed the 10th and 11th quarterly reports in the remote mode. The 9th quarterly report completed the Project “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”, being implemented by the main beneficiary, the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia-Sakpatenti with the support of the European Union since 2019.

Within the framework of Twinning project “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” four new Georgian Geographical Indications: Georgian Hazelnut, Georgian Tangerine, Racha Ham and Gurjaani Peach are being worked on. Discussion of the 9th quarterly report was conducted during the 8th meeting of the steering committee held remotely.
Nino Chikovani – Introduction of Mediation is one of the Priorities of Sakpatenti
Organized by the Mediators Association and Business Ombudsman of Georgia, international forum “Mediation for Business” is being conducted at the moment. The Program “Promoting the Rule of Law of Georgia” (USAID/PROLoG) of the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) is the main supporter of the event. The forum conducted remotely was opened by Ms. Salome Zurabisvhili, President of Georgia.

ELSA Summer School is being Held for the Sixth Time this Year with the Support of Sakpatenti
During four days from today, students from six countries, including students of the Faculties of Law of the leading Georgian universities will receive exhaustive information on intellectual property system.

Sakpatenti is Actively Working on Creation of the National Commission of Geographical Indications
National Commission on Geographical Indications, responsible for registration of new geographical indications and appellations of origin and identification of their compliance with the legislation, is being set up in Georgia. Creation of the first entity of this type, responsible for the geographical indications system, has become possible within the EU funded Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” (GE/16 ENI EC 0318).

Workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution
Workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution was organized by Sakpatenti and the EUGIPP Project team within the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP).
Mr. João Negrão, President of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) Boards of Appeal, and Mr. Gordon Humphreys and Mr. Sven Stürmann, Chairmen of the 1st and the 2nd Boards of Appeal of EUIPO, participated in the seminar.
Geographical Indications and Border Measures
A two-day seminar on border measures related to geographical indications was held for Georgian customs officers.
The seminar, organized by Sakpatenti, took place within the Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” and 25 representatives of the Customs Department of Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia participated in it.
The event was opened by Ms. Manana Pruidze, Acting Chairperson of the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti, Mr. Giovanni Piccirillo, representative of the Department of International Relations of the Italian Customs Agency, and Mr. Elguja Berandze, Deputy Head of the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.
