Outstanding Students of the General Course on Intellectual Property will Pass Free of Charge the WIPO Academy Specialized Courses
Within the joint project of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, and Sakpatenti, 68 participants completed successfully the General Course on Intellectual Property. The students with the top grades at the final exam were handed over the international certificates of the course completion, along with presents and special awards, by Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Sakpatenti Chairman, and Ms. Sabine Machl, UN Resident Coordinator in Georgia, attending the award ceremony. Ms. Caroline Storan, WIPO Distance Learning Officer, congratulated the guests and students present at the event.

Sakpatenti Chairman Awarded the Finalist Team “WIBBA” of the Millennium Innovation Award 2022
To promote innovations and new technologies among pupils of upper grades, the Millennium Innovation Award was held for the eighth time this year. The competition is organized annually by the Millennium Foundation, with the financial support of the US Embassy in Georgia and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. Sakpatenti is a loyal and active supporter of the competition, it awards finalist teams and for already the second year participates in the evaluation and selection of the winning teams.

The Regional Symposium on the Topic of Protection of Geographical Indications was Held in Turkey
A geographical indication, which indicates a place which determines the specific characteristics of products originating there, requires special protection in the conditions of globalization. To share experience and knowledge on this topic, a symposium was held in Antalya, the Republic of Turkey, with the participation of representatives of Intellectual Property Offices of various countries.
The regional meeting was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT), the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti and the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan. At the symposium, held on November 24 and 25, 2022, Sakpatenti was represented by Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy Chairperson, and Mr. Merab Kutsia, Head of Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds.

The Status of Appellation of Origin was Granted to One More Unique Georgian Wine
Registration of geographical indications and appellations of origin in Georgia is the authority of Sakpatenti. These statuses are granted to special Georgian products. A geographical indication and an appellation of origin inform consumers about the origin of the product and its unique characteristics which are attributable to the place of origin. The characteristic environment of this place and the traditional knowledge of production existing among the local population there make such product unique.
“Copyright Online” was One of the Topics Discussed at the Georgian Internet Governance 8th Forum
Representatives of the public, private and non-governmental sectors gathered at the annual Forum “Georgian Internet Governance” to discuss the challenges existing on the Internet. The event, held in the format of public consultations and dialogue, was organized by the Small and Medium Telecom Operators Association of Georgia (TOA). The agenda included the topic of protection of copyright on the Internet. Ms. Manana Pruidze, Deputy Chairperson of Sakpatenti, was invited to participate in the discussion. The four-day Forum took place at the Technopark. It was hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the National Communications Commission of Georgia and the Internet Society of Georgia (ISOC-Georgia).

Chairman of Sakpatenti Awarded the Winning Team of Competition “Leonardo da Vinci”
The annual Competition “Leonardo da Vinci”, aimed to popularize science, to enhance interest in innovations and technology, is completed. The competition serves to stimulate the development of creative thinking, research and practical skills among pupils. The event is organized by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. From the foundation of the competition, Sakpatenti is its active supporter. A representative of the IP Centre is a constant member of the Competition Commission, assessing the projects submitted by young inventors according to the patentability criteria: novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability. In the process of granting a patent for any invention, Sakpatenti is guided exactly by these criteria established by the legislation of Georgia.

Two-Day Seminar is Held in Borjomi with Participation of European and Georgian Judges
To share practice of European courts
in the field of intellectual property protection, a two-day seminar is held in
Borjomi with the participation of European and Georgian judges. Mr. Soso
Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia –
Sakpatenti, is attending the event in Hotel Crown Plaza.
In the seminar, organized by
Sakpatenti and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), 11
judges are participating from Georgia. Reférendaires and judges of the General Court of the
European Union (GCEU), the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the
Commercial Court of Liege (Belgium) and members of the EUIPO’s Boards of Appeal
(BOA) will share best practices with the Georgian judges.

Specialists are finishing work for the development of the “Trade Mark Guidelines”. A trademark is a sign that can be represented graphically and is capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from the goods or services of another undertaking. In Georgia trademark registration is carried out by the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – Sakpatenti

“Chacha House” was Named as the Best Company Producing the Geographical Indication Product “Chacha” in 2022
The traditional “Chacha Festival”, supported by the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia – Sakpatenti, after a two-year interval was renewed. Today, an exhibition and tasting of products protected by geographical indication “Chacha”, produced by farmers, peasants, small cellars and companies of the eight municipalities of Kakheti Region was held in Telavi.
