Georgia’s New Legal Framework on Geographical Indications was Discussed as a Case Study of Successful Reform at the WIPO/WTO Joint Colloquium
At the international colloquium, organized jointly by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), the case study of the reform implemented in Georgia was discussed. On the invitation of the WIPO Academy, Mr. Mery Macharashvili, Head of the Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, delivered a presentation with the status of a speaker. The topic of her presentation was the legal framework of Georgia’s geographical indications as a vivid example of a successfully implemented reform
Closing Event of the Joint Georgian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project (GESIP) was Held
The closing event of the joint Georgian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project (GESIP) was held at “Ambasadori Kachreti”.
The Georgian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project (GESIP) is implemented with the financial support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), in close cooperation between the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) and Sakpatenti from August 1, 2022.

Mr. Soso Giorgadze Awarded the Finalist Team “BEES” of the Millennium Innovation Award 2024
Sakpatenti is the body determining policy in the intellectual property field, which is actively engaged in implementation of various events aimed at the development of innovations and technologies, including the Millennium Innovation Award. Sakpatenti cooperates with the Millennium Foundation over the years and from 2014 – establishment of the competition – is represented in the jury and has participated in evaluation of the challenge projects and selection of the winning teams.
International Excellence School (IES) was Opened at Kutaisi International University (KIU), Dedicated to Intellectual Property Rights
Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti attended the opening event of the International Excellence School (IES) at Kutaisi International University. The international and local experts invited to the academic area of the International Excellence School will discuss the role and importance of intellectual property, workshops and practical sessions of various types will also be delivered.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced the Global Awards 2025. The WIPO annual Global Awards competition aims to reveal and showcase significant startups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and university spinouts that use intellectual property for business success as well as for social impact.

Notification for Patent Attorneys of Georgia
On May 15, 2024, the Parliament of Georgia adopted draft Law “On Patent Attorneys of Georgia” (hereinafter – the Law), which entered into force from January 1, 2025.

Sakpatenti Shared Experience in the Field of Geographical Indications with the Staff of the Intellectual Property Office of Uzbekistan
A 2-day webinar was held for representatives of the Intellectual Property Office of Uzbekistan, organized by Sakpatenti Intellectual Property Teaching and Training Center. The training activity was planned in response to an official request from the Uzbek counterparts and was aimed to share the experience of Georgia in the field of geographical indications. Currently Uzbekistan is at the initial stage of formation of the GI system and familiarization with international best practices is a priority for it.

Georgia was Added to the List of the States Party to the Marrakesh Treaty
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) updated the list of the states party to the Marrakesh Treaty and added Georgia to the list. In the updated information it is stated that the Treaty will enter into force, with respect to Georgia, on February 26, 2025.
